Boys Playoff Game Tonight 7:00PM at Mercer Island
(LIVE on KMIH radio, www.hotjamz.org OR 88.9/94.5 FM)
By: Rhett Workman - Snoqualmie Valley Sports Journal
A tough test awaits the Wildcats, who come into tonight’s game off a big loss Friday at Lake Washington, which followed a Senior Night loss last Thursday to Liberty (more on both of those games later). Mount Si was dominated in both games this season by the Islanders, who are very much ready for a deep postseason run. Sam Cohn leads Islanders squad, which fell to Bellevue in tiebreaker game Saturday putting them in this position.
The Wildcats will need senior leaders to step up tonight, such as Anthony McLaughlin and Ryan Atkinson, if they have any chance of pulling off what would be maybe among the biggest upsets in recent KingCo playoff history. View article

Wildcat boys fall in heartbreaker at Bellevue, 1-30-12
Posted by Rhett Workman on January 31, 2012 - SVSJ
The Mount Si Wildcat boys basketball team gave Bellevue all they could handle last night, but the Wolverines found a way to get it done in the end, handing Mount Si a heartbreaking overtime loss.
Despite 18 from Ryan Atkinson, the Wildcats fell 52-49 in overtime to Bellevue at Bellevue High School. The loss was especially tough on coach Steve Helm. “One of the hardest losses I’ve had in many many years,” Helm said by phone to the SVSJ. “The kids just played their heart out.” READ ARTICLE

Mount Si boys’ basketball back in win column with victory over Interlake, 1-28-12
Posted by Rhett Workman on January 30, 2012 - SVSJ
Mount Si’s boys basketball team got itself back into the win column once again Saturday night, ending a long losing string with a nice home victory over the Interlake Saints in Snoqualmie.
The Wildcats, behind a game-high 13 points from senior Ryan Atkinson scored a 49-39 win. Atkinson’s efforts are becoming more key as the season wears on; his efforts against the Saints came off a career-high 26 in the loss to Sammamish last Friday, an effort which helped Mount Si rally late after having started out very slow in that contest. Atkinson is noticing the improvements. “I’ve just been competing and playing sports for a very long time, and coming into this season, not playing last year, I lacked a little bit of confidence, but as the season progressed, started to take what I know just to compete and get better and better,” he said. Mount Si boys start out slow, fall to Totems despite huge night from Atkinson
Posted by Rhett Workman on January 28, 2012 - SVSJ
Mount Si’s boys basketball team came into last night’s game against Sammamish coming off a rough effort offensively in a loss to Juanita Tuesday. Initially last night, the Wildcat offense started off once again struggling to find its rhythm, but thanks to one of their top seniors, Mount Si did get its shooting touch back and rallied to make things interesting in the second half. But the hill proved to be too big to climb in the end, and the Wildcats fell once again.
Ryan Atkinson had maybe his biggest night as a high school player, scoring a game-high 26 points, but Mount Si’s offense was limited to just two first-quarter points and they ended up playing catch-up the rest of the way, going down 71-58 to the Totems, who showed why they may be a force to be reckoned with down the stretch in this high school boys’ hoops season. George Valle led the way for the Totems with 17 points. READ ARTICLE

Mount Si boys hoops fall on road, 1-25-12
Posted by Rhett Workman on January 25, 2012 - Snoqualmie Valley Sports Journal
Mount Si’s boys basketball team played its first game since the winter storms of last week last night against Juanita, and the rust clearly showed.
The Wildcats offense struggled in the 55-41 road loss to the Rebels. “We just really struggled to put the ball in the hole,” said Mount Si coach Steve Helm. The Wildcats as a team shot 3-17 from beyond the three-point line, making life even more difficult for scarlet and gray. READ ARTICLE

Mount Si boys fall to Sammamish, 1-6-12
Posted by Rhett Workman on January 7, 2012 - Snoqualmie Valley Sports Journal
Mount Si’s boys basketball team gave it their best efforts last night, but fell just short of pulling off a stunning road upset of the Sammamish Totems in Bellevue.
The Wildcats fell to the ranked Sammamish squad 58-54, as the Totems rallied in the second half from a halftime deficit to escape with the win. “(The) kids played just outstanding and we played well enough to win, (we) just didn’t get the win,” said Mount Si coach Steve Helm. READ ARTICLE

Previewing and picking another Friday night of hoops in the Valley, with the Wildcats at Sammamish
Posted by Rhett Workman on January 6, 2012 - Snoqualmie Valley Sports Journal
We are back with previews and picks for another Friday night of high school basketball action. Over the next four weeks, we will provide our assessments of that evening’s matchups and give you our thoughts about who we think will come out on top. Cedarcrest played last night, so it’s just Mount Si tonight, and they are at Sammamish for a double-dip of boys and girls action.
KINGCO 3A BOYS’ BASKETBALL
MOUNT SI WILDCATS VS. SAMMAMISH TOTEMS
SAMMAMISH HS, BELLEVUE, TIP APPX. 8:10 PM*
(*The start of this game will come no later than 15-20 minutes after the conclusion of the girls’ game)
Mount Si’s boys look to find the win column tonight, but it will be no easy task. Think Bellevue was good Tuesday night in handing the Wildcats a 54-37 loss? Sammamish is just as good, if not better. The Totems are ranked in this week’s Seattle Times poll (#10), and are 9-2 after a win against Juanita Tuesday night. Sammamish is led by three big seniors: Sami Jarjour, George Valle and John Steinberg, and all three have presented trouble for Mount Si in recent seasons. The Totems are coached by veteran Wes Newton, and the job he has done with that program, which he is now in his sixth season coaching, has been a tremendous one. READ ARTICLE

Mount Si boys hoops back home, fall to Bellevue, 1-3-12
Posted by Rhett Workman on January 4, 2012 Snoqualmie Valley Sports Journal
Mount Si’s boys basketball team returned home for the first time in three weeks for their first home game of 2012 last night, and found themselves facing a strong foe from Bellevue. While the intensity and competitive level of the Wildcats was high throughout the game, offensive struggles proved to be an issue again for Mount Si, as they dropped their second straight contest.
Miles Zupan and Jason Smith each scored 11 points to lead the Wildcats, but it was not enough as Bellevue went on a nice run midway through the contest and that ended up being the difference in a 54-37 Mount Si loss to the Wolverines. Bellevue and the Wildcats were tied 13-13 with about 3 ½ minutes left in the first half, then over the next approximately six minutes of action, extending into the second half, the Wolverines went on a 14-2 run to take control, and did not look back. Tyler Hasty led all scorers with 19 points for the Wolverines. READ ARTICLE

SVSJ preview: Mount Si boys hoops headed down to the Aloha State to meet some tough foes from L.A.
Posted by Rhett Workman on December 16, 2011 - SVSJ
Mount Si’s boys basketball team will be headed to Hawaii this weekend to play in a holiday tournament next week on the island of Maui. The third annual Lahainaluna Invitational will be held on the court at the Lahaina Civic Center, which is the home for the big Maui Invitational college men’s tournament seen every year on ESPN, so the Wildcat players once again will be competing on a big stage in their holiday action this year, just like they were last year when they went to Boston.
Wildcat coach Steve Helm is ready for the tough tests. “We’re facing some really good teams,” he said. READ ARTICLE

Posted by Rhett Workman on December 14, 2011- SVSJ
Mount Si’s boys basketball team closed out their home schedule for 2011 last night with a key win which could serve them well come playoff time.
Anthony McLaughlin scored 17 points to lead the Wildcats, but it was the nine points of Jason Smith in the fourth quarter, including two big three-pointers, which propelled Mount Si back from a late hole to score a tight 46-44 win over the Juanita Rebels which left the Wildcats at 2-2 in league heading into the holiday break. The game had the feel of a theme that Wildcat coach Steve Helm talked about in the SVSJ’s Wildcat boys’ basketball preview. “That’s what we say before we walk out on the floor; this last game we said it in our huddle, ’It’s war time’ because it is,” Helm said, and he was impressed again with how his players performed. “They’re getting better every game and I think they competed,” the coach said. Coaching change for Mount Si boys basketball
Posted by Rhett Workman on December 9, 2011 Snoqualmie Valley Sports Journal
We have breaking news coming out of the Mount Si boys’ basketball program concerning a coaching change within the staff of second-year head man Steve Helm, on the heels of a key KingCo test tonight against Lake Washington.
Lead assistant Warren Sheldon has announced his resignation, and is being replaced by Eric Riley. We are told Sheldon has left due to time commitment issues; in addition to coaching with Mount Si he has been involved with the Emerald City Basketball Academy operations in Preston, and it appears he will be devoting more time now to that as a result of this decision. The rest of the story from the Valley high school hardwood from Friday

Mount Si boys hold their own, but fall to Lake Washington
Lake Washington used strong outside shooting early to take control of the game, then used solid defense the rest of the way to hand the Wildcat boys a 63-46 loss Friday night in Snoqualmie. Four LW players scored in double figures as the Kangs hit five three-pointers in the first quarter to take a 19-11 lead after one, then maintained their advantage down the stretch. READ ARTICLE

Previewing and picking a night on the basketball hardwood in the Valley...
Posted by Rhett Workman on December 9, 2011 Snoqualmie Valley Sports Journal
Mount Si vs. Lake Washington, approx. 8:15 p.m. tip, Mount Si HS, Snoqualmie
The Wildcats will look to build off a strong performance from Tuesday, in which they rallied to force overtime, then beat the Interlake Saints for their first win of the season. Trouble is, to do this they will have to beat a LW team which is ranked #7 in the current Seattle Times standings. LW is led by guard Matt Staudacher and center Darien Nelson-Henry, and in past years have looked to be a fairly athletic group. How Mount Si responds to this will be key to whether they have a chance in this one. READ ARTICLE

Wildcat boys hoops gets first win of season in OT, 12-6
Posted by Rhett Workman on December 7, 2011 Snoqualmie Valley Sports Journal
Mount Si’s boys’ basketball team picked up its first win of the season last night, but needed extra time to do it in.
Four players scored in double figures, led by senior Anthony McLaughlin’s 19 points, and the Wildcats rallied to beat the Interlake Saints 71-69 in overtime last night at Interlake High School. Beau Shain scored 15 to aid the Mount Si efforts, which looked bleak until McLaughlin hit some critical free throws down the stretch which helped force the extra session. The two teams went to overtime tied at 61-61. READ ARTICLE

Previewing and picking a Friday night on the Mount Si hardwood against MI
Posted by Rhett Workman on December 2, 2011 - Snoqualmie Valley Sports Journal
It’s another big Friday night of high school action in the Valley. This time, though, it’s on the basketball hardwood, as the Mount Si Wildcats play the first of six Friday night doubleheaders featuring both the boys and girls. For all six of these double-dips (tonight, next Friday, and all four Fridays in January 2012) we will roll out for you our Friday fall staple, the preview and pick. So with that, let’s get started.
Boys @ appx. 8:15 – The biggest concern for the Wildcat boys coming into the season was how the team would respond to losing over 50% of their expected offense this season during the summer, with the losses of Trent Riley (knee), Tyler McCreadie (knee) and Mason Bragg (transfer). Well, those concerns were made very obvious in their loss Tuesday as they struggled for much of the contest against Issaquah. MI is expected to be a better foe than the Eagles were, and those Issaquah kids were a pretty good team in their own right. Worse, tonight will count in the league standings, so if Mount Si wants to send a message about how competitive they look to be this season, as was noted in our season preview of them, they have some work to do. SVSJ preview: Wildcat boys’ hoops looks to rebound from bad offseason to compete in tough KingCo 3A
Posted by Rhett Workman on November 22, 2011 Snoqualmie Valley Sports Journal
Mount Si’s boys basketball team had maybe the worst possible offseason, as it lost three top players, but the Wildcats look to be competitive this winter despite all of that adversity.
Coach Steve Helm returns after leading his team to a 10-13 record and a berth in the SeaKing District Tournament last season in his first as Wildcat coach. Helm, though, will have some big pieces to fill, as his two top scorers from last season’s team, Mason Bragg (returned home to Australia) and Trent Riley (knee injury) are out and sophomore post Tyler McCreadie, who looked to possibly be in the mix to be the backup post player this season, is also out after hurting his knee during the Wildcats’ fall league season at Bellevue College.
